What Is Trauma?

Trauma Isn't Just a Memory — It's Stored in the Brain

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is not a sign of weakness. It's a neurological response to overwhelming experiences that the brain couldn't fully process at the time. As a result, the brain becomes stuck in a state of threat — even long after the danger has passed.

Research shows that trauma dysregulates key brain regions: the amygdala (your brain's alarm system) becomes overactive, while the prefrontal cortex — responsible for rational thinking and emotional regulation — becomes underactive. This creates the cycle of hypervigilance, avoidance, intrusive memories, and emotional flooding that defines PTSD.

Common PTSD & Trauma Symptoms:

Flashbacks & intrusive memories
Nightmares & sleep disruption
Hypervigilance & startle response
Emotional numbness or detachment
Avoidance of trauma reminders
Difficulty concentrating
Irritability & anger outbursts

Who Experiences PTSD?

Trauma Affects More People Than You Think

PTSD is more common than most people realize. It doesn't only affect combat veterans — trauma can result from any experience that overwhelms the nervous system's capacity to cope.

Combat & military service
Sexual assault or abuse
Childhood neglect or adverse experiences
Domestic violence
Accidents, injuries & medical trauma
First responder & emergency worker experiences
Loss, grief & sudden bereavement
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) from prolonged trauma

"Existing treatments for PTSD — including prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, and EMDR — are only partially effective. Nonresponse rates reach up to 72% in military and veteran populations, prompting researchers to evaluate alternative treatments such as neurofeedback."

— Berman et al., Frontiers in Neuroscience, 2025

The Science

How Neurofeedback Treats Trauma at the Brain Level

Unlike talk therapy, neurofeedback works directly with the brain's electrical activity. Using real-time EEG monitoring, we identify dysregulated brainwave patterns and train them toward healthier, more balanced states — without drugs and without having to relive your trauma.

01

Brain Map (qEEG Assessment)

We begin with a quantitative EEG brain map — a precise, non-invasive snapshot of your unique brainwave patterns. This identifies the specific dysregulation patterns associated with your trauma symptoms.

02

Personalized Protocol Design

Using your qEEG data, we design a targeted neurofeedback protocol specifically addressing your PTSD symptoms. No two trauma protocols are alike — yours is built around your brain.

03

Real-Time Brain Training Sessions

During sessions, EEG sensors are placed on your scalp (no electrical current — they only read). You watch a screen or listen to audio that responds in real time to your brainwaves, rewarding healthy patterns as they emerge.

04

Progress Monitoring & Adjustment

We track your brainwave changes session by session and adjust your protocol as your brain learns and improves. Most clients begin noticing meaningful changes between sessions 10–20.

peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials examining neurofeedback for PTSD, spanning military veterans and civilian populations
72%
nonresponse rate for standard PTSD psychotherapy in veteran populations — highlighting the need for alternative approaches like neurofeedback

Your Treatment Journey

What to Expect at NATX Neurofeedback in Austin

We walk alongside you every step of the way. Here's what a typical neurofeedback journey looks like for someone seeking relief from trauma and PTSD.

1
Initial Consultation — Free

Discovery Call & Intake

We start with a free consultation to understand your history, symptoms, and goals. There's no pressure and no commitment. We want to make sure neurofeedback is the right fit for you before we begin.

2
Session 1–2

qEEG Brain Mapping

We conduct a comprehensive quantitative EEG brain map. This is completely non-invasive and painless — you simply sit comfortably while sensors read your brain's electrical activity. We use this data to build your personalized protocol.

3
Sessions 3–10

Active Neurofeedback Training Begins

Each appointment is a 60-minute block. Actual brain training time varies by individual and protocol — some clients train for 20 minutes per session, others for the full 30, depending on what your brain map indicates and how your nervous system responds. During training, EEG sensors are placed on your scalp and you watch a show of your choosing on Netflix. The feedback is audio-visual: the screen subtly brightens or dims and the audio gets louder or quieter in real time based on your brainwave activity — gently guiding your brain toward healthier patterns while you simply watch something you enjoy. Many clients begin noticing improved sleep and reduced anxiety within the first several sessions.

4
Sessions 10–30+

Deepening Change & Consolidation

As your brain learns to self-regulate, symptoms typically continue to diminish. We monitor progress and adjust your protocol as needed. Most trauma clients complete 20–40 sessions for lasting results, though improvements often begin well before that.

5
Ongoing

Maintenance & Long-Term Support

Once your goals are achieved, some clients opt for occasional maintenance sessions to support long-term brain health. Others find the changes are lasting without further sessions. We'll work together to determine what's right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Neurofeedback for PTSD in Austin

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, drug-free brain training technique that uses real-time EEG feedback to help your brain learn to self-regulate. For PTSD, it targets the overactive amygdala and dysregulated prefrontal cortex patterns associated with trauma responses — helping reduce hypervigilance, flashbacks, and emotional dysregulation at their neurological source.
Talk therapy works at the cognitive level — helping you process and reframe traumatic experiences through language and thought. Neurofeedback works at the neurological level, directly training the brain's electrical activity patterns. Many clients find neurofeedback especially valuable when traditional talk therapies haven't been fully effective, or when revisiting trauma narratives feels re-traumatizing.
Most clients begin noticing meaningful changes between sessions 10 and 20. A full course of neurofeedback for trauma typically involves 20–40 sessions, though this varies significantly based on trauma history, severity, and individual brain patterns. We create a personalized treatment plan after your initial qEEG brain map and re-evaluate progress regularly.
Yes. Neurofeedback is considered safe and non-invasive. The EEG sensors only read your brain's electrical activity — they do not send any electrical signals into your brain. There is no medication, no needles, and no requirement to verbally recount your trauma. It is well-tolerated across diverse populations including veterans, children, and survivors of complex trauma. Our BCIA-certified Clinical Director conducts a thorough intake before beginning any protocol.
Coverage varies by insurer and plan. Some providers reimburse neurofeedback under mental health or biofeedback CPT codes. We recommend contacting your insurance company to ask about biofeedback/neurofeedback coverage, and we are happy to provide documentation to support your reimbursement request. We also offer self-pay options and can discuss payment flexibility during your free consultation.
No. Neurofeedback is frequently used alongside other therapeutic modalities and does not require discontinuing medication or therapy. In fact, many clients find that neurofeedback enhances the effectiveness of their existing treatment. We always recommend collaborating with your full care team.
Yes! NATX Neurofeedback serves clients throughout the greater Austin area including Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Kyle, and beyond. We also offer telehealth options for certain aspects of care. Contact us to discuss the best option for your location.
